When it comes to taking care of something as expensive and with as much sentimental value as your ring or band, you definitely want to know how to best take care of it!

Shiva’s Gold & Gems is always happy to professionally polish your rings for you, but the Caribbean is far and we know you’re not always nearby! Sometimes you just need a quick and easy at-home cleaning method. Most rings are easy to maintain, but if you really want yours to sparkle and shine, there are a few things to keep in mind. Diamonds may be one of the toughest natural stones on Earth, but they still need to be looked after!

Different Methods for Different Rings

While you may not realize it, everyday tasks can make your ring dirty, causing it to not shine the way it should. Anything from hairspray to oil collects on the surface of your ring and brand and makes it look dull – something you definitely want to avoid!

Each ring is unique because of the stones used, metals they are made of, and types of settings but there are some basics methods that you can use to help keep your rings clean. Below we will detail some of the best practices.

How Often To Clean Your Ring

When it comes to diamond rings, it is actually best practice to polish your ring every week to keep it at its very best and looking good as new.

However, if you have a gold band, polishing it too often can actually wear away at it so it is important to only clean it when you feel it really needs a special shine. The finer the gold, the more fragile it is.

How To Polish Your Ring

The good news is regardless of the type of ring you have, there is one foolproof method that always works like a charm! Follow the steps below for the best DIY ring polishing:

  1. Fill a bowl with warm water.
  2. Add a few drops of basic dishwashing soap. Remember to avoid harsh cleaning liquids as this can further damage your ring.
  3. Soak your ring in the bowl for about 20-30 minutes.
  4. Gently brush your ring with a soft toothbrush. This will help remove any residue, especially in any grooves in the design and setting of your ring.
  5. Rinse your ring off in warm water to remove any remaining soap.
  6. Pat your ring dry with a soft cloth and leave it to air dry. Be sure not to use a paper towel as this can sometimes scratch gold.

By following these steps your ring will always look fresh and ready for any occasion!

Secret Shiva’s Ring Polishing Tips

If you find that our good old warm water and dishwashing soap method is not working for your ring, we have a few more tricks up our sleeve you could give a try!

For some gold rings, our customers have found that soap and water just doesn’t provide a strong enough clean. In cases like this, we would recommend adding just a bit of baking soda to your solution, but no more than half a teaspoon and only if you find your band is especially dirty!
