A Dragon Takes Flight: Roger Dubuis Excalibur Dragon Monotourbillon

The Year of the Dragon promises a bountiful harvest of dragon-themed watches, with brands across the spectrum unleashing their creative spirit. While the Roger Dubuis Excalibur collection is often synonymous with the extravagant, Arthurian-inspired “Knights of the Round Table” editions, it also celebrates bold skeletonized models with intricate complications.

The latest skeletonized model with a tourbillon complication is the Excalibur Dragon Monotourbillon, flaunting the figure of a sinuous dragon to mark the dawn of the Chinese Lunar New Year and the ascendance of the mighty dragon.

The Excalibur Legacy

Introduced in 2005, the Excalibur collection embodies the flamboyant spirit of Roger Dubuis. As CEO Nicola Andreatta noted in a recent interview, the Excalibur underwent a transformation in 2021, embracing a lighter, more contemporary aesthetic with refined lines. As a fully integrated Geneva-based manufacture, Roger Dubuis boasts a legacy of over 40 calibres since 1995, many featuring bold contemporary architecture and the prestigious Poinçon de Genève hallmark.

A Dragon Emerges

Several skeletonized iterations of Roger Dubuis’ signature flying tourbillon, like the Spider Pirelli, showcase the whirlwind regulator at 7 o’clock alongside a large openworked star-shaped bridge dominating the upper right dial quadrant. The Excalibur Dragon Monotourbillon retains the tourbillon’s position but replaces the star bridge with the captivating figure of an S-shaped dragon.

A Masterpiece in Detail

The dragon’s head coils around the barrel, its body gracefully weaving down the lower dial before slipping beneath the flying tourbillon and re-emerging at 10 o’clock. Crafted from 27 individual brass pieces, the dragon boasts black lacquer embellishments on its sides and a contrasting pink gold treatment on top. Aligning with the brand’s dynamic aesthetic, the dragon’s components are meticulously positioned on 25 distinct levels and angles, creating an illusion of depth. The dragon’s presence extends to the watch’s reverse, meticulously metallized onto the inner surface of the sapphire crystal caseback.

Timekeeping Elegance

Applied to a pink gold-galvanized brass flange, the hour markers mirror the bezel’s V-shaped notches, their interiors filled with black Super-LumiNova for enhanced legibility. The openworked pink gold hour and minute hands showcase a refined satin-brushed finish and black Super-LumiNova inserts in their tips.

Technical Prowess

Powered by the in-house manual-winding Calibre RD512SQ movement, the skeletonized construction fosters a light and airy aesthetic, accentuated by the negative space that emphasizes the flying tourbillon, the meticulously finished components, and the intricate dragon artwork.

As per Roger Dubuis’ tradition, the flying tourbillon reigns supreme, its cage mounted on a single point for unobstructed viewing. The lower cage, crafted from non-magnetic titanium, ensures stability, while the upper cage utilizes mirror-polished cobalt chrome to achieve lightness. This lightweight construction contributes to the impressive 72-hour power reserve when fully wound. Each component, adhering to the Hallmark of Geneva standards, is meticulously finished and decorated by hand.

A Refined Presence

Embodying the recent design refinements of the Excalibur collection, the 42mm diameter and 12.6mm thickness pink gold case retains its powerful presence while embracing sleeker lines. Flanked by guards, the screw-down crown ensures a 100-meter water resistance rating. The case’s prominent notched bezel and three arched lugs on each end boast vertically brushed surfaces and polished bevels, adding a touch of elegance.

A Timepiece for the Dragon’s Year

Completing the ensemble is a black calfskin leather strap equipped with a quick-release system for effortless interchangeability, secured by a pink gold triple-folding buckle. The Excalibur Dragon Monotourbillon transcends mere timekeeping, transforming into a captivating artistic expression that celebrates the mythical dragon and the innovative spirit of Roger Dubuis.
